Abstract

This is the introductory manuscript for the Special Issue on Fighting Against COVID-19. In this, the guest editors commenters all the accepted manuscripts for publication, presenting them grouped on four main subtopics: (I) COVID-19 dissemination modeling; (II) follow up of social isolation; (III) artificial intelligence and deep learning applied to COVID-19 diagnosis; and (IV) different technological developments on fighting COVID-19.

Author Biographies

Gabriela Hoff, Clinics Hospital of Porto Alegre

She is a Pos-Doctor Senior at Clínicas Hospital of Porto Alegre (Brazil). She has a Master's and a Doctor degree in Science, Nuclear Biosciences at Medical Physics concentration area by the University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). From 2001 to 2014 she has worked as a professor at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul performing teaching activities and acting as a member of the Ethics in Research Committee and Graduation Course coordinator. In the last years, she has collaborated in projects with different Institution and researchers: 2011 to 2012 with Maria Grazia Pia at Istituto Nazionali di Fisica Nucleare, in Italy conducting research on the validation of transport models implemented in Monte Carlo codes; with Professor Sergei Paschuk at Universidade Técnica Federal do Paraná, in Brazil to validate Geant4 for dosimetry of proton beam to be applied on proton computed tomography and patients dosimetry on proton therapy; in 2018 with Bruno Golosio and Viviana Fanti from Università degli Studio di Cagliari in a project of Monte Carlo tools validation (Geant4 and XRMC) on applications for external dosimetry in Medical Physics Applications. She is an IEEE NPSS member and an IEEE NPSS Transnational Committee representative member of South America and an Associate Editor of Latin America Transactions. Gabriela has experience in medical physics, computer simulation, and external dosimetry, acting on the following topics: mammography,

Hiram Ponce, Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad Panamericana

He is full-time professor and researcher in the School of Engineering at Universidad Panamericana (Mexico). He graduated in Mechatronics Engineering at Tecnologico de Monterrey (Mexico), obtained a Master in Science Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in the same university. He is member of the National System of Researchers rank level 1 of the National Council of Science and Technology (Mexico). He is author of more than 75 international journal and conference publications, 8 book chapters, and 4 books in the area of artificial intelligence and robotics. He is executive board member of the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence (Mexico), member of the Technical Committee on Neural Networks in IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, member of the Technical Committee on Robotics and Mechatronics in IFToMM, among other memberships. He was awarded with a Google Research Award for Latin America in 2017. He has served as guest editor in different special issues of reputed journals. He is currently Associate Editor in IEEE Access.

Humberto Sossa, Centro de Investigación en Computación Instituto Politécnico Nacional

He is full-time professor at the Center of Research in Computing in the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Mexico). He is director of the Robotics and Mechatronics laboratory. He is a senior member of IEEE, a member of the National System of Researchers (Mexico), a member of the Mexican Academy of Computing and a member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering. His interests are artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotics.
