Advances in the application of Ontologies in the area of Digital Forensic Electronic Mail

This article presents a descriptive review of the research published by the last three years in order to identify the state of the art in reference of the application of ontologies in digital forensic problems. Particularly, are analyzed the areas of ontologies, digital forensics and traceability. The objectives of the review are defined as the following: (i) Identify and study the most up-to-date research contributions on Ontologies and Digital Forensics; (ii) Relate these works from attributes of proximity (or distance) with the application of semantic technologies for the forensic analysis of emails and (iii) study the state of the art on the application of the concept of traceability in the modeling of oriented ontologies to solve Digital Forensic problems. This review includes the analysis of the most relevant articles of the designated themes, in order to identify the most up date framework, which the research being carried out on the formulation of an ontology to represent the traceability of an email for the forensic analysis of this component.
