Abstract

This paper presents an hybrid method for solving the multi-stage transmission expansion planning (TEP) problem, based on the metaheuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and linear programming (LP). PSO solves the investment problem and LP solves the operational cost problem. (N-1) transmission lines contingency is included in this model. The proposed approach is initially validated through numerical simulations of the classic Garver’s system, and its performance is later tested on the IEEE 24-bus system.
