Special Issue on Embedded Systems

Embedded systems (ES) design is crucial for the development of industry, technology and science; and it is an area which has significantly grown in recent years throughout Latin America, both in academia and in industry. ES refers to electronic equipment with a computing core which, unlike a personal computer, is designed to meet a specific function and is usually optimized to satisfy strict requirements of processing time, reliability, power consumption, size and cost. ES are ubiquitous; from a simple dishwasher, to medical devices and industrial robots, ES also play an important role in the development of the Industry 4.0; therefore, research on ES design plays a central role in the development of Latin American countries and knowledge exchange among scientists becomes of prime importance.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to solicit the latest unpublished work from both academia and industry on embedded systems with special interest in developments from research groups in Latin America. The areas of interest include both theory and applications on the following topics (they are not limited to):

  • Embedded software
  • Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
  • Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) for embedded applications
  • FPGAs, HDLs and ASIC for embedded systems
  • Robotics and Bioengineering applications of embedded systems
  • Architecture of microprocessors
  • Communications and protocols
  • Wireless communications
  • Applications of embedded systems to solve specific problems of Latin America
  • Implementation and design of embedded systems

Call for papers: May 28, 2019

Submissions Deadline (Extended): September 13, 2019 ( until 23:59 hrs Central Mexico Time)

Notification of Acceptance: October 14th, 2019.

Final Manuscript Due: November 8th, 2019.                                         

Publication Date: December 2019

Special Issue on Deep Learning

Deep Learning (DL) has emerged as an option in industrial applications, has resulted in significant groundbreaking advances in technology and has opened countless avenues to improve the understanding of its underlying principles. However, to take full advantage of this technology, we need to increase its visibility to stimulate its widespread adoption. DL refers to the establishment of mappings between input an output data constructed as hierarchies of complex concepts on top of simpler ones. Generally associated with artificial neural networks, include, among others subfields, convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, and reinforcement learning.  Among other things, researchers have utilized DL successfully to detect cancer in mammographies at human expert levels, create the best computer programs in chess, and synthesize speech from neural activity. Due to their impact in a broad range of disciplines, it is imperative for the development of Latin America countries to extend its adoption and promote awareness about is potential.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide a forum for the researchers and practitioners related to the rapidly developing field of DL to share their novel and original research of the topic. Therefore, we encourage the submission of the practitioners’ latest unpublished work on DL. Of our particular interest is the developments from research groups in Latin America. The areas of interest include both theory and applications on the following topics (they are not limited to):

  • Applications of Deep Learning to solve specific problems of Latin America
  • Autoencoders
  • DL Optimization
